"This book was so much fun! Well written, with sophisticated, complex plotting and unforgettable characters, "The Magazine" brings the world of 1990s Manhattan alive and takes the reader right to the editor's desk in what was publishing's heyday. I felt like I worked there! The story builds, the characters come alive, and I promise: you will not be able to stop reading. An incredible first novel and debut for this pair of writers. I highly recommend this book. A fascinating read but beware: You may forget the time!"

THE MAGAZINE Hugo and Kasia Moreno Books Reviews

  • A fast-paced, riveting tale of greed and betrayal, woven into the context of the inner workings of a powerful financial magazine. It captures with granular accuracy the whole editorial process, told with the authenticity that can come only from those with years of experience, as the authors have. But what makes this book more than just another inside baseball room-emptier is its memorable cast of characters-- people whose plotting and mendacity set a new low bar for newsroom behavior. If it's bad, it happens here. You don't have to be an ink-stained wretch to enjoy this yarn.
  • This book was so much fun! • 'The Magazine' takes you into the world of financial reporting in the late 1990's and into the tangled and strange lives of those wrapped up in it. It is a tale of betrayal and revenge, with unexpected twists and complex characters. It is humorous and exciting and hard to put down. A very fun read! Great for a summer beach book!
  • Kasia Moreno and her husband Hugo each have a couple decades of experience working at financial magazines such as Forbes and SmartMoney. (I'm quoting their book's biographical note; my fact-checking staff is on vacation this week.) With that background, they apparently thought, why not write a revenge thriller in which virtually all the main characters are connected to a financial magazine that is arrogant enough to call itself The Magazine?

The Morenos' novel, titled The Magazine, begins with a change at the top of the magazine's masthead on June 13, 1997. (The chapters are all dated to help readers keep track of the pell mell activity; the book ends on October 9, 1999.) The editor-in-chief is stepping down and, to select a replacement, he asks each of four candidates on the staff to come up with an outstanding story and may the best reporter win.

Rebecca, one of the candidates, sniffs out a potential blockbuster and works flat out for more than a week, ignoring sleep, ignoring food, barely drinking enough liquid to remain functional, and ignoring her widowed father's phone messages. (He's gregarious; she's focused on her story.)

At the end of the editorial competition she learns the fix was in from the beginning. The outgoing editor had chosen a successor before the contest but used it to spur the four reporters to outdo themselves for the next issue. Rebecca gets more bad news Her beloved father had been one of many terminated at his long-time employer after Tom Richardson, a billionaire hedge-fund manager bought the company. The father who'd been trying to reach his daughter all week to tell her he'd lost the job he loved terminated himself by jumping off the company's roof. Rebecca. shattered, quits The Magazine to work for its competition.

Tom Richardson is handsome, middle-aged, wealthy, and currently single. Twenty years earlier at Yale he had an affair with an Africa-American fellow student that resulted in a daughter, Kimmie. Richardson supported Kimmie and her mother but had no contact with the girl who, early in the book, shows up at his Fifth Avenue penthouse apartment. Kimmie, after a stint at Morgan-Stanley, obtains a reporting job at The Magazine.

The book's fourth main character is Helen who, when she isn't named editor-in-chief, apparently becomes The Magazine's managing editor. She meets Richardson, they fall in love, and he asks her to marry him.

So, the pieces are on the board and the game's underway Rebecca wants to avenge her father's suicide by destroying the man who inadvertently (indeed, unknowingly) caused it Tom Richardson. Kimmie wants to punish her father for his years of neglect. Helen wants to protect her finance.

Because the Morenos are writing from the inside, virtually all of the information about financial reporting and life on a national magazine ring true how you find stories, relationship with sources, editorial idiosyncrasies (I myself had an editor who made changes at the last moment just because he could), and more. And because the book is set at the end of the 1990s, The Magazine's publisher does not yet have to lose sleep over the internet and what it is going to do to advertising and circulation.

The novel does raise a question What is the point of it all? The Magazine's readers are, presumably, looking for an edge. an insight that a skilled reporter can tease out of SEC filings, analysts' reports, hints, and rumors. With the insight investors can confidently buy more stock, sell what they have, or short it in the expectation the price will drop. But how, the disinterested reader might ask, does this add to the country's wealth? It doesn't add to the country's stock of scientific or technological knowledge. It doesn't build a house, school, hospital, bridge, transportation system, or anything else. But that's a subject for another book.

The Magazine held my interest all the way through and not only because I have a background in magazine publishing myself. By the time I began to be less willing suspend my disbelief in the Morenos' complex plot I was hooked. How do you destroy a billionaire who can (and does) recruit one of the best private detectives in New York City and has an army of lawyers? How does a crack reporter protect her story from another crack reporter? How do you booby trap a loft apartment with nothing more than a screwdriver? Read—and enjoy—The Magazine to find out.
  • Fun, fast-paced story of business and business magazines just as computers, cell phones and the internet were turning both upside down. Those who were there will appreciate hat tips to factcheckers, copy editors and other grunts who helped fill the white space while billionaires, editors and star reporters tried to steer stories to their own advantage. But anyone who ever picked up a magazine will enjoy this book.
  • Get ready for a fun, fast ride!
    Right, Kimmie?

Tiamat Wrath The Expanse James S A Corey Books Reviews

  • I just finished Tiamat's Wrath and gave it 5 stars. I never give anything 5 stars, and maybe after I detox I'll want to drop it back to 4 stars, but really, it was great. Writing, characters, plot, sciencey stuff, galactic politics. All really well done. Thoughtful but accessible, not a combination we often get in SF.

Also, not the place to start the series or even this three-book arc.

Like Nemesis Games, this is a story where the crew of the Roci are all off doing separate things, which is how we left it at the end of the previous book, Persopolis Rising. If you read that, then you'll remember that the black fleet that disappeared through the ring gates early on has come back with newer bigger ships and rolled Empire all over the 1300 worlds humans have access to. Naomi, Alex, Amos, and Bobbi are all back in the underground game, and Holden is prisoner to High Consul Duart, man who would be emperor, or as Jim puts it, his "Dancing Bear."

Bobbi and Alex are off running another captured ship, the Gathering Storm, which they took away from the Laconian Imperial fleet at the end of the last book, and Naomi is doing deep thinking and strategizing for the new resistance while hiding out in an elaborate shell game of cargo containers and shipping vessels. Amos went off on a high-risk mission to get Jim back and has gone dark, and Jim's wandering around chatting up the emperor, the mad scientist that's been cooking proto-molecule since book 1, and Teresa, the girl who stands to inherit the empire if her now proto-molecule-immortal father ever falls. Meanwhile, Duarte has scientists (played by our old friends from Cibola Burn, Elvi, and Fayez) off looking for a solar system empty enough that he can do something to poke the bear on the other side of the ring, the one that makes ships disappear if too many go through too often. What could go wrong?

As Holden says, "...the problem with thousand-year Reichs. they come and go like fireflies."

I haven't liked all the Expanse novels equally, and the previous one made me worried that the series would end on a whimper rather than a bang, but Tiamat's Wrath makes me think that it's going to be something to remember.

  • UPDATE - Rating relates to technical details of - Audible integration - Not the story, which I love.

I think it is helpful for prospective and Audible purchasers to know that this feature is not implemented. It makes switching between reading and listening modalities so easy and frankly, I was surprised it was missing.

Unfortunately, reviews require ratings. If it did not require a rating, I would have given none.

I will say, if the physical books people received were missing an expected feature such as the back cover or several pages, I would think that would be worth noting as well.
    ——
I am sure I will love the book as I have the prior books and I have looked forward to this for months! I purchased the audible and kindle version as quick as I could today.

My one disappointment is that whispersync features that allows syncing of your position between the version and the audible version is not enabled. Is this planned to be enabled soon? This technical issue reduces enjoyment of books for me and I hope it can be added soon.
  • 4 words in and I hate the authors.
EDIT Finished, and seriously, this is the best narrative of the series. Dropped a star because they learned Matrin's lessons a little too well
  • I understand the one-star review! Everybody who loves this series is very invested in all its characters, and it is hard to say good-bye to any one of them. Yes, lots of tears shed during the reading of this book, tears of joy and sadness. But you know what? At the end of book nine, we're going to have to say good-bye to all of them. So maybe it is fitting that we get to say good-bye one at a time. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Back to my headline this book is packed with everything I love about The Expanse. Fantastic people (yeah, people, not characters) living through extraordinary events.

If you are new to this series, I envy the hell out of you you have 8 great books just waiting to be read.

If you know the series and are wondering whether to buy this one or not, the answer is a resounding YES!

Rick and Morty vs Dungeons Dragons eBook Patrick Rothfuss Jim Zub Troy Little Reviews :

Rick and Morty vs Dungeons Dragons eBook Patrick Rothfuss Jim Zub Troy Little Reviews

  • I loved this. I think it's a must have for any D&D player that also loves Rick and Morty. I also think it would be great for Rick and Morty fans that want to start playing D&D, but aren't sure where to begin. It breaks down the rules in an easy to understand way while using the Rick and Morty humor that we all know and love.
  • I love Rick and Morty as much as the next cynical millennial on the continent. Tabletop gaming has an even stronger attraction from my heart.

I recommend this story whole-heartedly. It flawlessly nails everything the fans on either side want.

My hopes are that Rick and Morty invade another beloved franchise, and then bestow upon that tale the love and care with which this one was written.

Buy this. You’ll love it. The world needs more.
  • I very much enjoy both Rick and Morty and D&D, and this comic hits a lot of the right buttons. The art is great. Having all the alternate covers (which this 4 part comic has a ton of alternates) and character stat sheets included is greatly appreciated. My only issue is some characterization of Rick that doesn't feel very true to his character, but even that doesn't feel like enough to knock off a star. Would definitely continue reading if they ever decided to continue with this crossover.
  • This was absolutely fantastic. I was skeptical going in, but the writers did a truly fantastic job of capturing the tone of the Rick and Morty television series while also encapsulating the history and fun of D&D. I would highly recommend this to fans of either (as it may pique your interest in the other) and as an absolute must to fans of both. Great work!
  • Big fan of Rick and Morty and Patrick Rothfuss so I got all the individuals when they came out and STILL got the trade. Really amazing story as well as beautiful artwork. Some of the variant covers are amazing. Worthwhile addition for anyone even hesitating because it's just so good.
  • Great Quality and Fantastic Art! If you love D and D and Rick and Morty or even either one of the two you should definitely pick this up!
  • Being a "mini series", I wasn't expecting too much, but I really liked this. I *do* like RPG and the D&D genre, so that helps. If you're not into that, this is should still be a solid 4-star series for you. If you like D&D, you'll likely agree with me on the 5-star rating I gave it.
  • One of the greatest fantasy writers of this time, possibly of all time, meets Rick and Morty. I have been enjoying the Rick and Morty comic saga for a little while now. Couldn’t believe Patrick Rothfuss joined the group. One of my favorite writers and definitely my favorite inter dimensional duo, bring this series to the top. Not to mention the artwork! Beautifully done! Love it!
