Keturah The Sugar Baron Daughters Book #1 edition by Lisa T Bergren Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
- The cover of this book is gorgeous. The vivid descriptions in this book, from the scenery to the gowns, create a lively world to explore. You can really feel the experience of each place, in England, aboard the ship, and on Nevis. I appreciated how each sister was unique and distinct. They wove together beautifully, and I love the potential of telling the story from each of the sister's perspectives. Despite all of these good elements, I did find the book a little depressing overall. The main character has been abused, which is not in itself overly oppressive; however, when you add to it the continual degradation by men once they are on the island along with the abuse of basic human rights of a 18th century sugar plantation, you have a lot of negative going on. I appreciate the accurate historical representation of the attitudes of this time in spite of how ugly they were. This is not something that should be glossed over. However, these abusive topics are not something that could ever be described as uplifting or light, making the material of the story rather heavy compared to some. I was confused as to why the back of the novel says "In 1772" and under Chapter 1 it says "10 June, 1773." That seems like a big discrepancy not to catch in a round of editing. There were some very exciting moments throughout the story. Storms were the central catalyst for these moments, and they were executed in impeccable fashion. So these surprises were greatly appreciated, but there were other moments that were a bit predictable. Fairly soon after getting introduced to Selah, I knew that she was going to be kidnapped at some point. The justice for the bad guys in this book was not as powerful as it should have been. However, I will say that the main conflict of bringing the plantation back to life was also not resolved, making it very apparent that these issues will not be fully resolved until the end of the series. So while I generally like more definitive progress in a single book even if it is part of a series, I was more satisfied with the conclusion of this novel and all that they accomplished than I have been with other novels that end in this fashion of stopping the story once the character's heart is healed in love and faith. The romance held the wonderful tension usually portrayed by this author and added excitement to the story. I am looking forward to seeing where this story takes us in the future.
- LTB has done it again with another beautifully researched and captivating read. Different from her River of Time series, one of my favorites of all time, Keturah takes LTB back to her roots as a poetic, historical storyteller. She has a particular way of drawing her characters in from page one with will defined characters and fluid plots. Keturah, after the River of Time leading ladies, is my new favorite heroine. Brave and unconventional in an era that required women to be a certain way, she has much to teach us today about ourselves.
- Lisa T. Bergren has managed to craft a beautiful Christian love story set on the island of Nevis in the Caribbean. Set in the 1700s, the journey of her main character starts in England; however, once on the island, adventures begin! Bergen’s descriptions of Nevis and surrounding islands’ foliage, cultures, and customs of the day are obviously well-researched and equally well-written up encouraging the reader to feel immersed in Island life as they read this book! Challenges, trials, rewards, and ultimately love give the book its dramatic appeal and keep the reader’s interest! I love this story and can’t wait to read Book #2 of this series! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
- What a grand find in this treasure! Readers will follow the lives of three sisters who bravely cross the Atlantic to the West Indies, rebuild their father's dreams as well as build memories of their own. Lisa Bergren weaves the characters' lives in challenging times and circumstances with faith and compassion, all intertwined in landscapes that encourage one to pack a bag and find a Caribbean adventure. Well done and I'm looking forward to the upcoming release of book two!
- All the reviews seemed good, but I cannot get into this book. It's got way too much detail at every turn with nothing really happening so I will put it down until I can get into it later.
- This book transported me to a time and place I was not familiar with. The facts about life with slavery are quite disturbing (of course) and I know there are so many horrors that weren't even touched. I wouldn't recommend it for young readers but this is adult fiction and was written conscientiously - to show us the truth about the time period without being too graphic. That being said, I was completely swept up in the story, the characters and their challenges and I couldn't put it down. I felt like I was missing something for days after I finished and realized it was because I was missing the next chapter in their lives since book 2 is not yet released! I would call that a job well done by Lisa Bergren.
- Goodness overcomes evil.
Just enough historical fact to reveal horrors of slavery.
3 sisters bound together by family and love.
Problem solving ahead of it's time and era.
Love wins. - Women have always had to step out of the norm and most times been resented for being capable of handling tough situations in life. The men on surrounding plantations disliked and actively worked against what this woman and her three sisters have set out to do. Very exciting as well as frustrating.
