In The Alternative Introduction to Biological Anthropology, Second Edition, author Jonathan Marks presents an innovative framework for thinking about the major issues in the field with fourteen original essays designed to correlate to the core chapters in standard textbooks. Each chapter draws on and complements--but does not reconstitute (except for the sake of clarity)--the major data and ideas presented in standard texts. Marks explores such topics as how we make sense of data about our origins, where our modern ideas come from, our inability to separate natural facts from cultural facts and values as we try to understand ourselves, and the social and political aspects of science as a culturally situated mental activity.

"The title's "alternative" portion shows through at some points. For an intro class it would be fine, but if you have prior and latitudinal knowledge of the field there may be portions one will find problematic and at odds with evidential and consensus view points. Marks is also a little ham handed with blending Dawkin's-esque wit in sections that do not marry well with it, such as categorical divisions of biological ancestors in a way that can seem condescending even if you agree with him."

- some highlighting and stuff from where i got it, but i like that kind of thing (hence why i bought it used). pretty good book, i bought it for a class and I'm not finished yet but its easy and interesting to read, in my opinion )
- Bought this for my Anthropology class. I found the way it was written to be rather interesting. I guess the author likes to keep it interesting by throwing jokes into the literature which is nice for this kind of topic. It works as a sort of comical relief.
- Excellent book for mid-level anthropology classes. It would probably be great for intro-level as well but I think some of the nuances would be easily lost. The writing is engaging and interesting the whole way through. I even found myself chuckling at several parts. Highly recommend for anyone interested in anthropology, evolution, genetics, etc.
- I used this book in a graduate seminar in biological anthropology and it I would use it again.
- Although the book was underlined, the previous notes are helping me in my anthropology class. This came in handy when the bookstore ran out and I was not able to purchase it.
- Very good price and speedy delivery
